Sahalee Custom Kitchen in Sammamish
Sahalee Custom Kitchen
The homeowners felt their space was disjointed and lacked the functionality they needed.
Challenge
This dark and dated Sahalee kitchen and family room had too many doors and windows that got in the way of possible floor plans. There was an unnecessary desk in the kitchen, a frustrating built-in bread box, and a giant awkwardly-shaped island. A series of previous additions had resulted in a large square room that didn’t provide enough space in any one area for the family to work as a team. Even though it was one large room, it felt quite divided and didn’t provide enough seating in any one area, nor did it offer the homeowners the access they wanted to their covered outdoor entertaining area.
- The clients wanted a 60” range and large column refrigeration for all the cooking they do for their large family
- Working with the stone fireplace surround that was recently done
- Giving the client the cozy luxe lodge look they loved in a home of a very different scale
- Roof framing complicated the possible locations for relocating the cooking space and type of hood that could be installed
Solution
The room was redesigned to include what was important to the homeowners: space for the family to cook, dine, and play together. This meant a larger kitchen with plenty of counter and pantry space. Since gatherings for this family are focused around food and cooking, we omitted the idea of a family room in favor of a giant dining table, not only for dining, but also for spreading out games, puzzles and crafts. We installed five new outswing doors to improve access their exterior covered deck. The darker trim and cabinetry along with the textured wall covering and quartzite countertops helped to cozy up this large space.
- Updated the look of the great room by darkening the millwork, hanging a textural grass-cloth wallcovering, and installing new cabinetry and new hardwood floors throughout.
- We reworked the floorplan to omit one door, relocate a second and add three. We moved or omitted windows wth a net result of more daylight in the right areas.
- We relocated the cooking space and installed an over-the-range hood, adding a required soffit to the roof framing to house the hood
Result
This Sahalee custom kitchen checked all the boxes for this large family! Seating for all the kids on the island, room for the feast table, a 60″ range for crafting mega meals, and the warm, cozy, comfortable feeling of home. By relocating the garage access and reorienting the kitchen we were able to create space for primary and secondary prep zones, primary and secondary wash zones, and the chef zone on the island.
This family now has the room they always wanted to cook, play games, and spend time together in a cohesively designed space that not only meets their functional needs but is beautiful too.
Client Feedback
We first met the owner and staff members at a local remodeled homes event in our area. We loved the work that was performed at the owner’s home. It was thoughtfully designed and flawlessly executed. We then interviewed the company to discuss remodeling our family room and update a guest bedroom. April, the owner, met us at our home, then provided a rough quote for our project. Next we met with a project estimator who contacted various contractors for a more precise quote. After agreeing to the project, we met with a designer who presented the estimate, the timeline, and the next steps. Our designer helped us make important decisions on: cabinets, cabinet pulls, lighting placement, quartz countertop treatment, sink, faucets, carpeting, paint and trim colors. All the materials were ordered prior to starting the demolition and the remodel. We truly appreciated this business model! Due to the expert coordination with the project manager, carpenters and various sub-contractors — our entire project from start-to-finish was only 6 weeks. The outcome is beautiful, there were no surprises, and we are extremely pleased. The Nip Tuck staff and their sub contractors are cheerful, considerate, and very professional.
The strongest endorsement that we can provide is that we would hire Nip Tuck again for another project at our home.
