Making Laundry Less of a Chore

These clients desperately wanted to transform their primary bath into a spacious, spa-like retreat.

Challenge

When the homeowner of this Sammamish house realized how much time she spent inside her cramped laundry room — not just washing and drying clothes but also doing work and other tasks — she decided it was time to dream big. It was our job to tackle design challenges, so we needed to:

Solution

First on the agenda was to remove the bulky closet and install stacking laundry machines in its place. When we opened up the wall, we discovered central HVAC ducts running up the side of the closet, which required some creative cabinetry and a soffit to camouflage them. We then placed a built-in desk area at the entrance, with under-cabinet outlet strips installed to hide cords and keep the backsplash unmarred. The luxurious quartz countertop with marble veining runs the room’s perimeter, with clean white cabinetry above and below for plenty of storage. The curved statement window lets tons of natural light in, brightening the space and shining on the playful, patterned floor tile.

Result

Now, the homeowner can’t wait to visit her dream laundry room every day. In fact, this room was so special and unique that it won the REX Award for Getaway Room.
