The Role that Emotion Plays in a Home Remodel

Want to know the secret ingredient to a successful remodel? It may come as a surprise that your emotions are going to be the driving force for the results. How you want to feel in your home is critical to accomplishing any remodeling goal.

What does your current home say to you?

Walk through the areas of your home that you’d like to remodel. What are they saying to you? What drives you nuts and simply needs to change?  Some homeowners are driven to remodel because they can’t stand the empty feeling that comes when children are grown and moved on. Others have lived in their homes for many years, and the space simply doesn’t meet their needs anymore.  An outdated kitchen can be so difficult to maneuver through that cooking becomes a chore rather than the joy it once was. Every frustration that you have about your current home is coming from somewhere; so, it’s important to address the accompanying emotions, to better achieve the results you’re looking for.

Give yourself permission to dream.

Forget about the technicalities, the budget, the architecture, and whatever other barriers you’ve created in your mind. Give yourself a moment to imagine your dream home, and note every detail, regardless of how outrageous it may seem. Your design team could have an easy solution available that would scratch that emotional itch, even if it was not exactly how you envisioned. There are many ways to make your dreams come true, but you need to start somewhere. Think of the outcome you would love, not how you’re going to get there.

Imagine how the new space will make you feel.

Take another walk through your home with all those fresh remodeling ideas. How do you feel now? Think about how incredible it would be to walk through that wall into an open space, with friends and family happily entertained. Imagine no frustrations when navigating narrow hallways to the old bathroom at the back of the house. Those feelings of relief and happiness will guide you in the right direction, and it’s critical that you listen closely.

Being in tune with your emotions is the most important part of any remodeling project. You’re investing so much into your living space, and it would be so disappointing if the result left you dissatisfied. Dare to dream and let those emotions run free when discussing the remodel with your design team. Be open about what makes you frustrated, and consider instead what would make you content. The most innovative and beautiful spaces are designed by emotions, and if you want happiness guaranteed, you’ll want to honor your emotions.
